Better Guitar Playing From Better Guitar Tuning

By: Lyd M.

Guitar tuning can be difficult for the beginning guitarists. However, this exercise is necessary because the wood that makes up your guitar does lose its shape over time. Your guitar strings will also lose its tension. Thus, every time you pick up your guitar, it will need some sort of tuning. Some tips are given below to make it a breeze for you to carry out your guitar tuning.

1. Make it a habit

Even though getting your guitar tuned correctly is difficult, once you have made guitar tuning into a habit it will become easier for you. When your guitar is tuned properly, you are able to spot the mistakes that you have made and can then improve on them. A properly tuned guitar will make the whole process of learning the guitar a breeze.

2. Piano

There are many ways to correctly tune your guitar. One of these ways is by using a piano. A piano is able to provide the correct sounding note. For example, let's say that you are trying to tune the E string on your guitar. You play the E note on the piano and strike the E string on your guitar. Compare the two sounds and adjust your guitar strings by tightening or loosening them. Once you think the note E sounds the same, you do the same for all the other strings. This is tuning by ear. If you use this method, you need to use your judgment.

3. Tuner

Using a battery operated tuner is another way to tune your guitar. This is very simple and easy to use. All you have to do is to turn on your tuner. Turn the dial to the note that you want to tune your guitar to. Therefore, in order to tune the E note, for example, you turn the dial on your tuner to E. Strike the E string on your guitar. Adjust the E string by tightening or loosening the string. Once the E note on your tuner lights up, you have found the correct pitch for your E string. Then you would do the same for the other strings as well. I would recommend using this method if you are really new at playing the guitar.

Guitar tuning is of sheer importance. Do not skip this step. Even though it can be discouraging in the beginning, the more you practice your guitar tuning, the more trained your ear will be. You will soon start to pick up on the fine distinctions in your guitar tuning. This will only benefit your guitar playing capabilities.
