Six Easy Ways to Save Money When Traveling

By: Lina S. Yates

We all know traveling's expensive, but if you've got the travel bug, you need to get out there and, well, travel! It definitely feels much better than staying at home just so you can save your money.

Here's the key: do your research and follow a few simple guidelines, and you'll find bargains and get to where you want to go while spending a lot less money than you might have originally thought.

1. Go in the off-season. Don't travel when everyone else is. Off-season's a great time for getting discounts. Not only that, but you definitely won't miss the crowds. So haul out that spirit of adventure!

2. Lower your air transportation costs. Airfare can make or break a budget, so search carefully for the best fares you can find. You can usually get good deals online, and even better deals if you check prices for different times of the day, or avoid weekend flights. And don't forget to check for prices at different times, too.

3. Check out the alternatives to flying. You can definitely be creative, and try something you've never tried before. Cruises are fun, and you can sometimes get good deals. Traveling by bus can be an option if you have additional time. And train rides are a great experience.

4. Remember your car. Even with high gas prices, traveling by car might be a good, inexpensive way to go in comparison to flying. Just make sure to be prepared for all possible costs. And get your car serviced before you leave, so you can avoid having to do emergency repairs far away from home.

5. Ask about cheaper room rates. When hotels have empty rooms, you can sometimes get a better rate. Hotels that cater mostly to professionals and business people, for example, tend to be less busy on weekends, so check to see if you can get a cheaper rate during those times.

6. There are always accommodation alternatives. Bed and breakfasts, retreat centers, hostels, timeshares - get creative and see what you can come up with. Maybe you can find a place to housesit. Or work out a home exchange arrangement. Another good idea for summer travel is university or college dorm rooms, which are often empty and available for rent during the summer.

You definitely don't have to pay major dollars to travel. Do your research, employ these tips, and you'll be able to satisfy that travel bug in you.
