Why Are Some Wrinkle Creams Better Than Others?

By: Geoff Hopkins

Customers today face a wealth of choices between competing skin care products. Advertisements portray unique products from each major company, whose patented 'secret formula' separates each into its own category. A blizzard of beguiling advertising images flies into the face of the consumer trying to turn back the hands of time.

But do they work? Some do and some don't. How can you tell which product works best for your particular skin? The 'trial-and-error' approach is tried by many, with spotty results. An incautious consumer can be left with both an empty wallet and those same, unsmoothed, crow's-feet leering in the mirror.

No single solution can be offered, because we are all different. The best product is the one which works for you. Inspect the cream's listed ingredients. Do you have tender, easily irritated skin? Feel the product; is it greasy or unpleasant, or 'just right'? A product that feels uncomfortable will likely not be used for long. No skin cream can produce results if it is not used.

Another area to consider is the environment. Some companies are more eco-friendly than others. If you are trying to live a greener lifestyle, look for creams and products that come in recycled or recyclable containers. This is an easy way to contribute to keeping our environment protected for future generations.

Most people today count their pennies. Skin care products can be expensive, and buying a whole jar only to discover the product doesn't work for you, or that you dislike its smell or texture, can be a money-waster. A better idea is to send away for free samples. This way you can test a variety of products without spending a lot. Once you do find a product you like, check the shelf to see if there's a cheaper store brand with similar ingredients. If you must use the brand-name product, look in magazines or your Sunday paper to see if the manufacturer offers a coupon.

If you want to see results, try taking a few before and after pictures with a digital camera. Make sure to use the same lighting so that you can really see the differences. Take a photo once a week and see the results happen right before your eyes!

You can delve into this topic with as much diligence as your time permits, because there are scholarly journals in the field of dermatology which evaluate the effectiveness of various wrinkle preparations. Don't just read about the research on the back of the label, read the research. The Internet is a great way to find useful information. One caution: much dermatology research, both by the manufacturer and by academic researchers, employs animal test subjects. If you don't think that's fair to our furry friends, look for a skin care company that shares your concerns.

Your own dermatologist is an invaluable resource. He knows all there is to know in this field. What skin creams work best against wrinkles? Ask the man (or woman) who would know: your doctor.
