FAQs On Stopping Gum Disease

By: Robert William Locke

Mnay people ask how to stop gum disease. This condition is usually fairly easily recognized in that the first symptoms are swollen red gums, rather than firm , pink ones which is their normal state. Bad breath may also be a problem. Gum disease (the early stage is called gingivitis) can be difficult to detect as it advances very slowly and is a painless condition.

You may think that gum disease is an older person's condition but it is also a problem for more and more younger people. Teeth are supported by the gums and bone tissue. Once these are damaged or compromised in any way then teeth are likely to fall out or will have to be removed by the dentist. Generally, early detection can determine whether or a not a person can be cured with success.

If your gum disease is serious, your dental professional may refer you to a specialist called a periodontist. In its early stages, gum disease is called gingivitis. Gingivitis sometimes, but not always, worsens into a more severe form of periodontal disease called periodontitis. Gingivitis is a mild form of gum disease that can usually be reversed with daily brushing and flossing, and regular cleaning by a dentist or dental hygienist.

What causes gum disease? It is usually caused by a build up of plaque, an invisible sticky layer of germs that forms naturally on the teeth and gums. Dental plaque is home to hundreds of bacteria.. Gum disease is also one of the main causes of tooth loss among adults. This is usually exacerbated by smoking or chewing tobacco. Certain medications, eg. chemiotherapy , oral contraceptives and defective fillings together with poor fitting bridges and bad oral hygiene complete the black list.

Brushing teeth at least twice a day is a good rule to adopt to prevent gum disease. Visits to the dentist should be done regularly so that dental cleaning - the build up of tartar cannot be removed by brushing alone. Flossing daily or the use of a a special gum brush are great ways to keep the gums free of disease. As people get older, bone loss will occur as it is a normal process of ageing and therefore teeth are at risk because bone tissue provides vital support for your teeth.

A recent Canadian study says that drinking red wine may help to prevent this condition but the acidic content of red wine could cause other problems. Another study showed that a compound in common antacids may help prevent gingivitis. Melatonin may promote bone formation and stimulate the body's immune response, two factors that can affect a person's gums.

Fluoride in toothpastes is an essential ingredient to help your teeth remain strong and preserve the gums. Some dentists recommend that you use a mouthwash containing fluoride. The fact that so many bacteria can survive in the mouth and then turn into plaque and later tartar, means that keeping the mouth clean is a daily task that cannot be neglected. Antibiotics or antibacterial rinses are sometimes prescribed by dentists when the problem is serious.

Any type of stress which will attack your immune system is not good in the long term as it will lower your defences. Other strategies are to maintain good health and give up smoking if you can !
