Lobster - a Delicious Treat

By: Isabel Da Silva

Lobster is considered a delicacy and many people love its rich taste. Once you have tried this tasty treat, you will definitely want more.

Before trying lobster, you might like to learn a bit more about what lobster is, where to buy it, how to cook it and how it should be eaten.

A lobster is actually a broadly used term to describe a marine creature known as a crustacean. There are large clawed lobsters and then there are those without claws. Several types of lobsters that do not have claws are spiny lobsters, slipper lobsters, and squat lobsters.

Some of the best known and most popular types are the clawed lobster, the reef lobster and freshwater crawfish, which are found in a lot of southern and Creole recipes.

If you love to try and eat seafood, you probably already like lobster and eat it when you can. It is not cheap but sometimes it is worth spending a little bit more than usual to eat some lobster, also known as the 'king of seafood'. The lobster has a regal appearance and sits majestically on the plate. You can smell the mouthwatering flavor before your first bite.

Usually, you will find the best prices (and best quality lobster) in fishing villages and coastal regions. The farther you are from the sea the higher the price. The average cost can range from $7.95 to $29.95 per pound depending on the location and the retailer.

If you plan to spend that much on a meal, it is very important that you know how to prepare and cook the lobster. It might seem daunting because it is a new food and cost a lot but it is quite easy to prepare lobster. You should buy one lobster per person, as a general rule. Some fishmongers offer to steam the lobster before you go home with it but it is best to take the lobster home live if you can because the taste will be fresher.

Once you have prepared the meal, the best way to serve lobster is actually a very simple recipe. The steamed, boiled, or grilled lobster should be accompanied by a bib, butter, and lemon.

The simple lobster recipes tend to be the best way to enjoy the food. Lobster is a very special food and does not require a lot of frills to dress it up. If you do have leftovers (which is rare but might happen on occasion) you can take the lobster out of the shell and make lobster salad or a lobster po'boy sandwich for the following day's lunch.

Remember you don't need to know anything about gourmet food to enjoy a delicious dish like lobster. You need to understand where to buy it, how to prepare it and get hold of a basic lobster recipe. This will definitely result in a meal to remember. If you have never tried it, why not visit your local seafood restaurant and order some? The delectable flavor will make you want to buy and cook some yourself the next time!
